Lawn Care During Winter Months
Lawns require proper caring and nurturing throughout the year if you want them to grow well and beautify your surroundings. With the changing seasons, grasses and plants have different growth patterns. Accordingly their needs and level of nutrient requirement keeps on changing.
Winter months beginning from December influences the growth of plants and grasses to a great extent. Dried up grasses and withering plants are one of the common phenomenon that we all see during the late winter stages or the beginning of the spring. Many attribute it to the characteristic spring effect. This is of course true, yet, we can improve the situation if we take timely precautions. And when it comes to lawn care, the best precaution is to give it some more attention during the early winters. Note that I specifically mentioned ‘early winter’ because this is the time of the year when people completely ignore lawn care.
Now, winter is a time of the year when everything slows down to a freezing point. Plants, animals, and birds are equally affected with the extreme cold. In winter, your body’s metabolism goes down leading you to a stiff and sluggish lifestyle. The same happens with the plants and grasses in your lawn. Most of the common lawn grasses do not grow much during deep winters. And people ignore lawn care because the grass remains green for long. The water content in the grass doesn’t evaporate due to the cold and dry climate. People do not water the lawns for weeks and still their lawns look quite green.
As the winter turns into early spring, there is a sudden change that shows in the plants, trees and grasses. The moisture trapped in the grass dries out suddenly making them dull green to pale yellow. This is the time when people start seeing brown spots and dry patches in their lawns and they attribute it to the seasons. But they do not realize that proper lawn care during the entire winter could have saved their lawn from drying up in the following spring.
The level of lawn care required in the winter is not too high. You should not forget to water your lawn at least once in a week. If you are living in a dry area, water twice a week. Whenever you are watering your lawn, take it slowly and do it in two to three rounds. Take a break after the first round (ideally using 1 inch of water) and let this water sink into the roots. After 5 to 10 minutes, complete another round of watering. This will let the plants absorb maximum water that helps them live longer.
Weed your lawn regularly in winter. Weeds can destroy the lawn faster in winter. As there is minimal grass growth, the weeds can easily suck up all the nutrients in the soil.
There are certain wintertime grasses that grow well in cold climates. Something like rye grass can offer a lush green lawn solution even during the coldest of winters.
